Do you ever wonder what face cream your dermatologist uses or what toothbrush a dentist uses? And do they really floss every day? I, too, have wondered this and I thought maybe you all wondered about my plant care tips. Here’s my top five:

  1. MULCH, MULCH, MULCH: I recommend 3-4″ deep and matching the plant above it as much as possible. I’ll be doing a plant care training video series and it will dive underground so that you can see all the groovy reasons why mulching is so important.

  1. Fertilize spring and fall: I highly recommend using Hollytone fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Why? Because almost all the plants I love like to be on the low side of the pH scale.

  1. Water only when needed: Plants do not like to have “wet feet” any more than you do and unlike you, they can’t move! Overwatering causes all kinds of issues, so only water when the soil is dry.

  1. Identify pests and diseases and then decide your tolerance level: Once you’ve identified any issues, you can now decide how to treat them. We need insects and it is impossible to live in a bug-free environment… despite my sisters deep felt desire.

  1. Enjoy: Plants are forgiving… until they are not. I kill stuff all the time and it is ok. Just learn from it!
